Chivalry: it's dead.

Let me tell you about a special little moment I had a few weeks ago.

It was the last day bestie Robyn and I hung out before she moved away. When Heather and I dropped her off at her house, Robyn's dear old man friend was waiting to take her to supper. This man is an elderly man from Robyn's church, and she often dines with him and his wife after Sunday service.

Here's where my heart stops.

This man pulled up, hobbled out of his car, and... opened the car door for Robyn. As soon as it happened, Heather and I looked at each other and exploded - "Did he just get out of the car to open up her door?" "Did Robyn's grandpa friend really just open her door?!" Friends, it was like we had witnessed a miracle - no, it was like we had seen a mirage.

Driving away Heather hastily texted our question to Robyn: "DID HE JUST GET OUT OF THE CAR TO OPEN YOUR DOOR FOR YOU?!"

Robyn's response? "He always does that!"

After five full minutes of chatting about how wonderfully sweet the moment was, I stopped. "What does it say about our generation that we're both overwhelmed by the gesture of opening a car door?" I asked Heather.

I don't remember her response, or the rest of the conversation really. All I remember is the bereft feeling.

There is still kindness in the world, don't get me wrong. But chivalry? It's dead.

  1. I personally don't think it's dead. I still call people Sir and Ma'am, open the door for others, pull out chairs at the dinner table for others, etc. and my wife will often open the door for me, whether that be the car door or the house door, she calls people Sir and Ma'am, etc.

I think it's just there are not many people who DO do it anymore. But it is still alive!

  6. i mean, it's hit or miss though. some of these actions are great, holding doors and car doors...but in the interim i've always found it slightly awkward to wait for these things...like while the man is getting out...you just stand there? when you could open the door and get in?

    i love it...i'm just saying...

  10. Old men are so lovely to know (i don;t mean that in a weird sugar dady way) so many of them dress in a shirt and tie even when they aren't doing anything special. They could teach the younger generation a thing or two. If only the younger generation would get off their computer games and listen ;)x

  11. What a cute story! I'm quite the independent woman so I'm usually found opening doors for others, but when a gentleman does it for me I secretly love it! I don't know if it's dying or it only really starts when we're older!

    Something to think about.
